S&W’s vision is to be the world’s preferred proprietary seed company which supplies a range of sorghum, forage and specialty crop products that supports the growing global demand for animal proteins and healthier consumer diets. S&W is a global leader in sorghum seeds with significant research and development, production and distribution capabilities. S&W also has a commercial presence in proprietary alfalfa, and through a partnership, is focused on sustainable biofuel feedstocks primarily within camelina.

History

Founded in 1980, S&W Seed Company is a global multi-crop, middle-market agricultural company headquartered in Longmont, Colorado. We are a global leader in sorghum seed traits with significant research and development, production, and distribution capabilities.

45 years ago, a group of cattlemen sought to develop the best alfalfa hay forage for their herd. They enlisted the expertise of leading breeders and agronomists to develop varieties that would provide superior traits while maximizing yield. After gathering the best and brightest minds in the industry, our breeders began developing the most advanced, university-verified, non-dormant alfalfa seed varieties available anywhere in the world. In addition, due to the soil conditions around the base of the former Tulare Lake, where much of the production took place, our team developed varieties that would withstand the rigors of the highly saline conditions of the former lake basin.

As farmers in the region began to recognize the capabilities of these developed varieties, we began selling the seed to farmers throughout the region and other areas of the world with similar soil challenges, such as the Middle East.

After decades of innovation and progress, S&W Seed Co. elected to go public in 2010. Since then, we have dramatically opened new markets, expanded acreage, and expanded our research and development focus beyond its roots in alfalfa.

In 2018, S&W acquired Chromatin Inc, a fully enable sorghum company. Through this acquisition, S&W gained our award-winning research and development team in Lubbock, Texas and our production team is in New Deal, Texas. Research initiated in 2015 created the DT Trait, which is half of the Double Team Sorghum Cropping System to provides over-the-top grass control when partnered with ADAMA U.S.’s FirstAct herbicide. S&W launched Prussic Acid Free Livestock Feeding Solution in 2015, which allow livestock producers peace of mind when grazing sorghum-sudangrass after a freeze or during a drought. Double Team and Prussic Acid Free are only the beginning as S&W continues to develop other traits that solve the problems sorghum growers face.

With worldwide sales and distribution through a direct sales force and dealer distributors, we continue to provide the world’s farmers with the best seed trait technology to maximize yields and profits.
