S&W Seed Company (Nasdaq: SANW) today announced the introduction of alfalfa seed variety SW9215RRS, a unique, high-yielding, salt tolerant, non-dormant variety offered with the Genuity® Roundup Ready® technology. SW9215RRS is highly suited to production in the lower San Joaquin Valley of California, as well as non-dormant growing areas from southern Arizona through south Texas. S&W anticipates that SW9215RRS will enable alfalfa farmers to grow a highly productive alfalfa variety in challenging soils under salt and water constraints, now with the added ability to apply Roundup® and other labeled herbicides containing glyphosate, for expected convenient and efficient weed control.
Mark Grewal, chief executive officer of S&W Seed Company commented, “The commercial introduction of S&W’s highest salt tolerant alfalfa seed variety with the Roundup Ready® technology is a milestone for S&W and potentially the alfalfa seed industry. S&W’s goal is to offer its customers the broadest spectrum of alfalfa seed traits, helping growers around the world address the challenges they are presented with every day. SW9215RRS combines the industry’s highest salt tolerant capabilities with Genuity® Roundup Ready® technology to create a variety that S&W believes is unmatched in the industry today.”
Robin Newell, vice president of North American sales, added, “SW9215RRS has been under development for several years. Our aim in the development of this variety was to bring a whole new level of salt tolerance to alfalfa hay growers who choose Roundup Ready® technology. Our S&W retail distribution partners in U.S. non-dormant growing areas look forward to offering SW9215RRS to their customers who grow alfalfa.”
